Ojos Del Salado

6879m – Feb 2012

After Aconcagua Phil Huddy and I headed to Ojos – the highest volcano in the world?  We were really tight on time, and were going in unguided, and with pretty sketchy information on the area (note to self, travelling in Argentina would be easier if you spoke Spanish!)

We got our info from a local policeman, who reckoned no-one had been up that year.  He organised our 4WD in (about an 8hr trip), and gave us a beacon to hit when we wanted a pickup.  We just had to remember that pickup would arrive the day after we requested it…

The colours of the terrain on the drive in were phenomenal.

It was incredibly remote, and the camp sites quite desolate.

Our packs were heavy, and I was still tired from Aconcagua.  Add to that the tight schedule that didn’t allow for a rest day and I bonked on summit day.  6813m out of 6879m… I could see Phil on the summit, but I couldn’t believe he had scrambled straight line up to it.  So I tried looking for an easier route, without success.  It was getting late, and I had nothing left, so I began the descent.
